• Martial Arts Equipment - The Belt

Posted on February 8th, 2010 Kate No comments

The Martial arts belt is one of the most common pieces of the martial arts uniform. While different arts may have different types and styles of uniforms - From the commonly seen tops and pants of karate uniforms to the more elaborate jackets, shorts and shirts of different styles, most disciplines will wear a belt, sash or something around the waist. While definitely having a functional aspect, like a karate beltholding up one’s pants or keeping your gi top in place, the belt can also be used as a weapon. I have seen the belt used to wrap around and choke an opponent and in some cases it has been used to entangle an enemies weapons. But there is a deeper meaning to the belt as well.

The belt is more importantly used to show a student’s level of achievement. There are very few disciplines that do not use the white belt to signify a novice and a black belt to identify a master. This is where most agreements end. I have been to numerous schools and not one of them agrees upon meaning or the progression of colors, beyond white and black. Some schools even use multi-colored, or partially colored belts to show achievement.

Schools have many different ideas on what the symbolism of the belt color is. Here is one example from a nearby school that uses karate uniforms:

White - New beginning. Without blemish. Pure

    Yellow- Action. Beginning of movements.

Green- Life. The concepts of Martial arts starts to take life in the student.

Red- Heat. Refining their skills in the heat of training

Black- Mastery. Full development and maturity.

Most martial arts disciplines agree that the black belt is really just the beginning of understanding the art. Once a black belt is reached, the student has a true understanding of the meaning and fundamentals, but is only just starting their quest for mastery. As a matter of fact, mastery may never be achieved, but it is something to be strived for. As has been discussed, whether it is a belt of sash, one of the most basic pieces of almost all martial arts uniforms is the belt. Its use and meaning is quite important to the world to practitioners of almost every discipline.

My Dallas personal trainer is incredible at her job. I work nights, so mid-afternoon sessions work best for me. Each time we meet, my personal trainer in Dallas is extremely punctual. Our sessions are full of energy, which helps pump me up for my night shift.

My job requires a lot of focus, and I know that exercise is a great tool for boosting brainpower. My trainer from Lady Trainers To Go ensures that each workout session we have challenges me to the fullest. I love how my exercise regimen never gets stale. • Unreliable workers need not apply

What do you think about the above title?

    Amusing?  Maybe
    Disgraceful?  Possibly

    Encouraging?  Most definitely

Maybe I look at the world of recruitment from a completely different angle, however having spent many years auditing the recruitment practices of many high profile agencies, the fundamental understanding of what does and doesn’t constitute discrimination compliance has always been lacking.  On too many occasions I have witnessed blatant discrimination in the form of advertising and general applicant data held on file. When highlighting the potential hazards with the perpetrator, the one constant industry response is “Oh I just didn’t think”

Therefore, dear reader, although the recent debacle at a UK Jobcentre where an Employment Business was informed that their advert containing the line ”must be very reliable and hard-working” was in fact discriminating against un-reliable applicants actually lifted my heart in that, at last, someone was actually trying to work within the spirit of Compliance.

    • Misguided ?     YES
    • Mis-informed ?  YES
    • Inadequately Trained ?  YES

For me though the Jobcentre employee should actually be given a medal, not reprimanded for not knowing what they didn’t know, they at least THOUGHT about the potential effect this statement could have had on an “unreliable” person.

Going back to my original paragraph, too many recruitment practitioners do not have adequate knowledge of the pitfalls surrounding legislative non-compliance. I can only state with absolute conviction that by going back to basics and giving our people the correct tools to do their job, by way of a robust Induction and follow on Training programme, can we hope to eliminate the risks and subsequent financial penalties incurred by so many Recruitment Businesses.
