Because both websites link to each other there are Two Way Links or reciprocal links. Keep in mind to ask for a link from related sites, they are more important to Google. By the way a Two Way Link is not very significant for a good position in Google, sure it is still better than no link. Google likes One Way Links. This is a link from another website to your site and there is no link from your site to the other site. You can get such links from web directories. But they contribute less and less to a high-quality ranking. One Way Links would be of course again the best of a competing site because they are very related. You sure have problems to find someone who gives you a link for nothing in return.

But if you have two partners B and C, you can proceed differently. You (A) link to B and B links to C and not back to A. C gets a link from B and in return links to A.
