• Corfu Island Greece

Posted on October 8th, 2009 Kate No comments

The most northerly and, with Greece’s highest rainfall, the greenest of the Ionian Islands. Corfu lies close to the mainland and the Albanian coast. Described by Homer as ‘beautiful and rich’, it is mountainous, lushly fertile and fringed by fine beaches with lovely aquamarine waters.

From the 8th century BC, Corfu was subject to a succession of powers, though it never became part of the Ottoman Empire.

Venice held it for 200 years, then Napoleon seized it, and for some years it was a British Protectorate. Long a favourite with travelers, its quiet, idiosyncratic life is lovingly recorded in the books of Lawrence and Gerald Durrell. Now despite some indiscriminate tourist development, it remains bewitching.

Corfu Town is a lovely place, a blend of splendid Italianate buildings; narrow alleyways and grand, French-influenced arcades. There are museums and fine churches, including the Church of Ayios Spyridhon, where the mummified body of the island’s patron saint lies in a glass-fronted coffin. (It is paraded through the town several times a year.) A popular excursion is to the photogenic islets of Vlaherna and Pondikonissi.

North from Corfu Town, brash or prestigious resorts are interspersed with fishing harbours and backed by magnificent scenery. Southwards lie the site of the ancient capital, Corcyra, and some large resorts.

Then a winding coastal road reaches some quieter beaches. The west coast boasts long stretches of glorious sand, a backdrop of green mountains - and some of the largest hotel conglomerations. Even here, more peaceful coves can be reached by boat, or a scramble on foot.

Inland, traditional villages offer shade and good food. Corfiot cuisine, unusually, has no Turkish influence, and often seems more Italian than Greek. A stroll and a climb in scented mountain air amid ancient olive trees rewards with views over ethereal greenness towards the heavenly blue sea.

  • How to include Shanghai into your China itinerary

Posted on October 8th, 2009 Kate No comments

Shanghai is China’s center of commerce and largest city with metropolitan population of over 17 million. Most visitors include Shanghai in a Beijing – Xian – Guilin itinerary, an itinerary that is only an introduction to China at best.

Due to Shanghai’s geographical position at the mouth of the legendary Yangtze, you should consider adding a Yangtze River cruise to your China itinerary. While a great itinerary of China can be done in as little as 12-days only, allowing for a visit of its key sites, Shanghai - Yangtze River – Chongqing – Kuming – Dali – Lijiang – Shanghai, 20-day China Grand Journey is definitely a tour that packs in China’s most impressive temples, pagodas and pilgrimage mountains.

To see Shanghai key sites and monuments you will need minimum couple days. The typical sites to visit are the emporium-lined Nanjing or Huai Hai Road, the colonial-era Bund along Huangpu River, a showcase of Shanghai city center, a hangout of Shanghai elite in the 1930s.

You should see the glories of ancient China at the Shanghai Museum. A must is also the Temple of Jade Buddha and the old China town. Visit to a carpet factory provides for a taste of China’s manufacturing might. And adding a charming performance at the Children’s Palace always promises to impress.

After that you can visit Shanghai’s neighbors. Travel by train to Suzhou, noted for its legendary ancient gardens, now a UNESCO heritage site. The gardens were actually the villas of retired court officials and wealthy merchants. Tour the Embroidery Research Institute, North Temple Pagoda, Pan Men City Gate and the Garden of the Master of Fishing Net. Worthwhile is also a visit to a silk factory. Do not miss a boat ride on the Emperor’s Canal, aka “Chinese Venice”.

Not far from heart of Suzhou is a small picturesque town of Zhouzhuang, a place to go for a morning meditation in the Master the Fishnet Garden and to marvel at its many canals and architecture of Qing and Ming dynasties.

While in Shanghai it’s also fascinating experience to sightsee Shanghai’s aspect as the “City of the Next Millennium.” Great experience is to visit the 421-meter-high Jinmao building, a landmark skyscraper in the Pudong district of Shanghai. Another grand experience is to take a ride on the fastest magnetic train in the world.

  • Limited Edition Wrist Watches

Posted on October 8th, 2009 Kate No comments

Wrist watches provide an elegant touch to formal attire. Most people now adays no longer wear wrist watches due to the explosion of cell phone usage, but good limited edition wrist watches are hard to come by. Believe me, I know.

I remember the first wrist watch my father gave me, it was an old swiss army wrist watch, silver in color. I used to wear that watch all the time, until it broke of course. Once it broke, I went back and relied on my old cell phone for the time. It is amazing to me that we as a culture have stopped using wrist watches. I can understand why we have since some of them can be so heavy, or a burden to wear, but with a good suit a good wrist watch should be worn.

Some good wrist watch manufacturers are Movado, Tag Heuer and Seiko just to name a few. These manufacturers provide outstanding wrist watches at great prices. They all provide sporty, elegant, or every day styles of watches.

To this day I still do not wear a wrist watch, even with my suits. Starting today, I plan on wearing a wrist watch. I want to wear a wrist watch as a tribute to my grandfather, whom used to always wear a wrist watch everywhere he went. It was not uncommon for him to wear it to bed! If we was around today, he’d be ashamed of all the kinds today who no longer wear watches.

  • Some Muck Garden Shoes And I Am Ready

Posted on October 8th, 2009 Kate No comments

It wasn’t too long ago that I had the kids, husband, and a nice suburban house. That was twenty years ago. Now I still have the same beautiful house, my husband has since passed, and my two kids are older and have moved away from the area.

I taught elementary school for a long time, and hopefully touched the lives of many of my students. Every week I run into a former student whether it’s at the grocery store or the restaurant.

One of my interests in life is gardening, and I look forward to summers because of this. Having the summers off is the biggest benefit to teaching school, us teachers used to look forward to it more than the kids every year.

Now, my house doesn’t have a very big yard, but what it does have is enough room for me to plant quite a few rows of vegetable and other plants. Every morning, I slip on my Muck Boots Garden Shoes and head out to take inventory. There are not too many things that give me as much joy as seeing the progress of a growing plant. Keeping track of my children is my biggest joy of course, but since they are not here with me, this will suffice.

My next door neighbor Amy bought me these Muck Daily Shoes as a gift. They were specifically made to resist fertilizer, dirt, and water. They come in brown so you can’t even tell if they are dirty. It’s definitely a shoe for the ladies.
